The Revenue Department is an important department of the Government of Maharashtra whose main functions are in charge of revenue collection, land administration, disaster management and welfare schemes for farmers and rural workers. Established during the British period, the first and foremost functions of the revenue department were the collection, assessment and administration of land revenue. During the British rule, different land revenue collection systems were introduced in different regions of India, such as Maharashtra. Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, land revenue was collected directly or from ryots in various areas of the state. This system formed the basis of land revenue administration and shaped its agro-economic system. After independence, with the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960, there was a reformation of the revenue department which expanded its functions along with the democratic system and the principles of socio-economic development. The aim of these reforms was to eliminate historical family injustices, distribute resources more equitably, and reduce conflicts in rural communities. An important turning point in the history of the Revenue Department of the Government of Maharashtra is the enactment of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966. The purpose of this Act was to compile and amend the laws relating to land revenue administration in the State. He made reforms to simplify land revenue assessment, improve land registry management and protect the rights of landholders. Over the years, the Revenue Department has used technology to plan its operations and deliver services. It delegated its processes through measures like digitization of land records, implementation of Geographical Information Technology (GIS) technology, online land revenue payment system, reduced corruption and improved transparency. By using technology, the department has been able to increase its efficiency in revenue administration and service delivery. Moreover, Revenue Department of Government of Maharashtra has taken an active role in implementation of welfare schemes and programs for farmers, landless labourers. It includes program of assistance schemes, distribution of crops, land acquisition and implementation of related laws.
